You can get conservative patterns in traditional colors and they'll be unique, but still tasteful. For example, grey/ black houndstooth socks would go well with grey glen-plaid trousers. Fun socks IMO diminish the possibility for more creative use of color up top and are one of the worst ways of channeling expressiveness.
